2/27/85: THE SWEATER GAME

No. 1 St. John’s battled No. 2 Georgetown in what was the first game ever at The Garden to feature the No.1 and No. 2 ranked teams. The Big East rivals met earlier in the season, with the Redmen winning 66-65, ending Georgetown’s 29-game win streak. Now the Redmen were on a 13-game wining streak themselves, and part of their good-luck charm was a brown sweater with red and blue chevrons that coach Lou Carnesecca wore.

On this night, during pre-game warm-ups, Georgetown coach John Thompson opened his jacket to reveal a shirt with the same pattern as Carnesecca’s sweater. The move drew laughs from the Georgetown players, who went on to defeat St. John’s in an easier-than-expected contest, 85-69.
