Round 1 Recap: Clyde Frazier’s Best Outfit

NEW SCHOOL

THE COW VS. ZIG-ZAG

A tough first-round draw for the Zig-Zag suit, as it was matched up against the popular Cow suit, which stole the show with 69% of the vote. And to clarify: No cows were harmed in the making of this suit. Thanks to the aesthetic of his ruminating friends, Clyde dazzles in this getup (ranch pun intended). Note: Clyde’s bobblehead replica makes an appearance in the bottom right corner. Next up, the Cow Suit goes up against Polka Dot perfection for a Round 2 showdown.

Winner: The Cow

ZEBRA STRIPES VS. POLKA DOTS

Early on, Zebra Stripes looked like it could just coast to the easy ‘W.’ Complacency is rarely an effective mindset, however, and Polka Dots pulled ahead tortoise-and-the-hare style. This one came down to the wire, but Polka Dots ultimately saw victory, capturing 52% of the vote. The sleek, futuristic number may be fighting an uphill battle in Round 2, however, as it goes up against the famed Cow Suit.

Winner: Polka Dots

PATCHWORK VS. THE RED COW

The Cow Suit took a trip across the farm and went wild in the berry patches, and out came the Red Cow suit. Sequels are rarely as successful as the originals, but they can still be very, very good. Patchwork Clyde put up a good fight with its color palette and coordination, but even the passing thought of a cow suit erases any memory of, well, anything else. Next up, the Leopard Print.

Winner: The Red Cow

FOREST GREEN SQUARES VS. LEOPARD PRINT

Leopard Print kept its lead throughout Round 1, but that didn’t keep Forest Green Squares from making it interesting. As the seconds ticked down, Forest Green Squares did all that it could to close the margins, but fighting with a jungle cat is a daunting task. Forest Green Squares found that out the hard way, as it fell to Leopard Print, 57% to 43%. Looking fierce, Leopard Print sprints along to the quarterfinals to face fellow mammal … the Red Cow.

Winner: Leopard Print

BACK IN THE DAY

MINK COAT VS. SUBWAY RIDE

The early goings had the mink coat in the lead, but Clyde’s subway photo went on a second-half surge en route to the biggest blowout of Round 1, claiming 72% of the vote. The Mink Coat hung tough for a bit – it’s a mink, after all. Even though Clyde had a Rolls-Royce, the subway was his preferred mode of transportation on game day. This photo as a whole is one of the quintessential Clyde shots, and one that New Yorkers can relate with. Subway Clyde moves on to face Traveling Clyde in the quarterfinals in a vehicular battle.

Winner: Subway Ride

THE CLYDE BELT VS. TRAVELING CLYDE

Traveling Clyde may be hanging out in a Los Angeles airport before the 1970 NBA Finals, but no stress to be seen here. The moment was a big one and Clyde was ready for the occasion. The Clyde Belt is cool, no doubt. After all, Clyde and cool are synonymous. That being said, you need to give this one to the Clyde that takes even the longest of flights in style. No sweatpants to be seen here. Next up for Traveling Clyde in Round 2 is Subway Clyde – and both appear en route to greatness.

Winner: Traveling Clyde

CLASSIC CLYDE VS. THE ROLLS

This was one of the more lopsided matchups of the bunch. It’s truly as classic as it gets with all of Clyde’s staples. Those lightly-tinted glasses to top it all off say “I know I’m pretty slick, but I’m still approachable.” Each element in this outfit has its own character, but they meld together in perfect harmony. The Rolls throws in a pendant necklace for good measure, but it falls short here, losing 62% to 38%. Next, Classic Clyde goes up against Walt to Clyde in the quarterfinals. Both look quite at home in their respective settings, but only one is safe.

Winner: Classic Clyde

STROLLIN’ VS. FROM WALT TO CLYDE

Clyde always exudes confidence, but his Walt to Clyde ensemble, his entire persona screams: “Yeah, I own this!” He really, really does. Strollin’ Clyde is not one going to be caught off guard by a paparazzi shot. But he’s up against the photo that made then-Knicks trainer Danny Whelan exclaim: “Clyde!” upon first glance. The rest is history, and sorry Strollin’ Clyde, but so are you. Walt to Clyde wins it 64% to 36%. Next up for Walt to Clyde is fellow wide-brimmed maven, Classic Clyde.

Winner: From Walt to Clyde
