Damaris Lewis: Unforgettable

@DamarisLewis

Being from New York, I had always heard his name, but I had never seen him in person.

It’s always special when you are at The Garden – they do a really great job of honoring those that have played on past teams – and every time I’m there, someone would point out that Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier is on the Jumbotron.

The first time I met him, he had on his now famous cowskin suit. I will never forget that day.

It was definitely an “I’m in New York” moment.

But, the thing about Walt is, he’s somebody you will never forget. He makes sure that every single day when he wakes up, whatever he wears is going to be memorable.

I know thousands of people and I can’t tell you what they were wearing the first time I met them, but I will always remember that suit. And I’m not going to lie – I think that cow suit is my favorite. If I’m not mistaken, he has a zebra print one too, so I guess I’m just a fan of the animal collection.

Walt’s just the nicest person ever. I always go to his restaurant, Clyde Fraziers’ Wine & Dine, and if he’s there, he’ll sit down with everyone and, one-by-one, thank them for being at his restaurant … even if it’s packed.

And that’s really nice because I know some people who own restaurants and you just never see them. Walt is not the kind of person who is going to shatter your dreams.

When I was there recently, a little boy’s father asked if Walt would be on his kid’s YouTube show. And Walt happily said, “of course,” sat down and let the little boy interview him. You don’t see that stuff every day.

We all have really busy schedules – and Walt, in particular, is a really busy guy. But he really understands that he impacts the people that look up to him. A lot of people don’t care that they do, and that’s unfortunate, but he really does.

That’s a testament to his character because he’s the kind of person who makes sure that you don’t forget him, you feel that energy, you feel that there’s always something you’re going to take away with you.

What makes Walt the ultimate New Yorker is that he’s not afraid to stand out. People in this town are colorful and they have a lot of character. We don’t care about anything we don’t care about. Clyde doesn’t care what people say about how he looks – that’s a true New Yorker.

We are definitely going to do what we love; nothing and no one is going to change that. And that’s why he fits in so well here. It’s The Garden – the most famous arena in the world – why not walk in with a presence and make your statement?
