MADISON SQUARE GARDEN OPENS

Madison Square Garden first opened its doors in 1879 on 26th Street and Madison Avenue. It had no roof, a seating capacity of 10,000 and held such events as horse shows, dog shows, flower shows, concerts and boxing matches.


MARCIANO DEFEATS LOUIS

In 1951, a young, undefeated fighter named Rocky Marciano stepped into Madison Square Garden’s famed ring to battle a legend, Joe Louis, for the heavyweight championship of the world in a fight that would go down as one of the most memorable moments in Garden history.


WRESTLEMANIA I

The cultural phenomenon known as WrestleMania was born at The Garden on March 31, 1985. The event that launched the WWF (now WWE) into the stratosphere and married sports and entertainment for the first time, set a then record for pay-per-view buys in the United States.


THE CONCERT FOR NEW YORK CITY

Following the devastating events of September 11, 2001, Madison Square Garden played host to “The Concert for New York City,” to raise money for the victims and to honor the first responders, including the FDNY, NYPD and their families.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy illustrious event producers James Dolan, Harvey Weinstein and John Sykes teamed up to present “12-12-12”, A Concert for Sandy Relief. Over $50 million was raised and funds were rushed to those affected by the storm with the help of the Robin Hood Foundation.
