Courtesy of NY Rangers (NEW YORK, April 7, 2016) – The New York Rangers announced that Mats Zuccarello has been named the winner of the 2015-16 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Lenox Hill Hospital.
The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award is presented annually to the Ranger who, as chosen by the fans, “goes above and beyond the call of duty.” The award, which has been given annually since the 1987-88 season, bears the name of New York City Police Officer Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the line of duty on July 12, 1986.

Zuccarello has skated in 80 games with the Rangers this season, registering 26 goals and 35 assists for 61 points, along with a plus-four rating and 34 penalty minutes. After missing the Rangers’ final 14 playoff contests last season due to a head injury, Zuccarello has skated in all of the Blueshirts’ contests thus far in 2015-16. In addition, Zuccarello has established career-highs in several categories this season, including games played, goals, points, power play goals (seven), and power play points (18).
Zuccarello leads the Rangers in points, primary assists (27), even strength assists (24), even strength points (43), shootout goals (three), and game-deciding goals (two), is tied for the team lead in games played, ranks second in assists (35), power play goals, and takeaways (58), is tied for second in even strength goals (19), ranks third in power play assists (11) and power play points, and is tied for fourth in game-winning goals (four) this season. He has tallied all of his 26 goals and 54 of his 61 points in 2015-16 when the Rangers have either led by one goal, trailed by one goal, or were tied in the contest. In addition, 53 of Zuccarello’s 61 points have either been a goal or the primary assist on a goal. The Rangers have posted a 29-6-3 record in games which Zuccarello has registered a point this season, including an 18-3-2 record in contests which he has recorded a goal.
Zuccarello, who also received the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award in 2013-14, is one of seven Rangers who have received the award at least twice, along with Adam Graves (5), Ryan Callahan (4), Mark Messier (2), Jan Erixon (2), Sandy McCarthy (2), and Jed Ortmeyer (2).
