Alexander Nylander, Left Wing
Drafted 8th Overall, 2016 NHL Entry Draft

  • Nylander was born on Mar. 2, 1998 in Calgary, Alberta but was raised in Stockholm, Sweden.
  • He is the son of former NHLer Michael Nylander and brother of Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, who was selected 8th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
  • Listed at 6-foot and 180 pounds, Nylander recorded 75 points (28 goals, 47 assists) in 57 games for Mississauga (OHL) last season, winning the OHL Rookie of the Year Award.
  • Nylander represented Sweden in the 2016 World Junior Championships, leading them in points with 9 (four goals, five assists) as the team finished fourth.
  • He won a silver medal with Team Sweden at the IIHF U-18 World Championships earlier this year.

  • Asplund was born on Dec. 3, 1997 in Filipstad, Sweden
  • Listed a 5’10” and 176 pounds, he spent this past season with Farjestad BK in the SHL, recording 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 46 games
  • He represented Sweden at the 2016 World Junior Championships and also captained Team Sweden at the 2015 IIHF U-18 World Championships

Along with the pick used to select Asplund, the Sabres also acquired defensemen Dmitry Kulikov from the Flordia Panthers in exchange for defenseman Mark Pysyk and picks No. 38 and 89.
