Blueshirts select three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender
NEW YORK, June 25, 2016 – New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton, along with Director of Player Personnel Gordie Clark, oversaw the club’s activity at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25 at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York. The Blueshirts, who held six picks in the draft, selected three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender.
The Rangers made all of their six selections on Saturday. With their third round pick (81st overall), the Blueshirts selected defenseman Sean Day. Day, 18, skated in 57 games with the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this past season, registering six goals and 16 assists for 22 points, along with 27 penalty minutes. The 6-2, 231-pounder participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game during the 2015-16 season. In addition, the Leuven, Belgium, native was selected to the OHL Second All-Rookie team in 2013-14.
The Blueshirts used their fourth round pick (98th overall) to select defenseman Tarmo Reunanen. Reunanen, 18, skated in 11 games with TPS U20 in Jr. Liiga in Finland this past season, registering two goals and four assists for six points, along with a plus-four rating and 14 penalty minutes. In 2014-15, the 6-0, 178-pounder registered 30 points (eight goals, 22 assists) in 42 contests with TPS U20. The Aanekoski, Finland, native has represented his country in several tournaments, including the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
In the fifth round, the Rangers selected forward Tim Gettinger with the 141st overall pick. Gettinger, 18, skated in 60 games with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) this past season, registering 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points, along with 32 penalty minutes. The 6-6, 202-pounder established OHL career-highs in several categories in 2015-16, including games played, goals, assists, and points. Gettinger, who participated in the CHL Top Prospects Game in 2015-16, ranked fourth on the Greyhounds in shots on goal (177) during the past season. The Cleveland, Ohio, native also skated in 12 playoff games with Sault Ste. Marie this past season, registering one goal and three assists for four points.
The Rangers held two selections in the sixth round. With the 171st overall pick, the Blueshirts selected forward Gabriel Fontaine. Fontaine, 19, skated in 63 games with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) this past season, registering 20 goals and 25 assists for 45 points, along with a plus-29 rating and 43 penalty minutes. The 6-1, 179-pounder established QMJHL career-highs in several categories in 2015-16, including goals, assists, and points. The Sherbrooke, Quebec, native also skated in 20 playoff games with the Huskies, establishing QMJHL playoff career-highs in goals (five), assists (11), and points (16).
With the 174th overall selection, the Rangers selected goaltender Tyler Wall. Wall, 18, appeared in 31 games with Leamington of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL) this past season, posting a 27-2-1 record, along with a 1.49 GAA, a .940 SV%, and four SO. The 6-3, 202-pounder led the league in GAA and SV% in 2015-16. In addition, the Leamington, Ontario, native was selected as the GOJHL Rookie of the Year in the Western Conference this past season.
The Rangers used their seventh round pick (201st overall) to select forward Ty Ronning. Ronning, 18, skated in 67 games with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, registering 31 goals and 28 assists for 59 points, along with 18 penalty minutes. The 5-9, 167-pounder established WHL career-highs in several categories in 2015-16, including goals, assists, and points. The Burnaby, British Columbia, native led Vancouver in goals and points during the past season.
