WASHINGTON CAPITALS (15-7-3) @ BUFFALO SABRES (10-10-6)
GETTING BACK INTO IT
The Washington Capitals will look for their third win over the Sabres in two weeks when the two clubs meet tonight at KeyBank Center. The Caps grabbed a 3-1 win over the Sabres on Nov. 25, and then edged Buffalo 3-2 in overtime on Dec. 5.
The Sabres are going to be much healthier on defense, as they have suffered an inordinate amount of injuries. They have been without three regular defensemen for a prolonged period of time, however, both Dmitry Kulikov and Josh Gorges have a chance of returning against the Capitals tonight.
RISTO A STUD
Defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen had the game-winner on his first goal of the year Tuesday against the Oilers. The 22-year-old stud backliner is emerging as one of the NHL’s best, and has a goal and six assists in his past five games, and a goal and 15 assists for 16 points in 26 games.
KANE RETURNS TO FORMER SELF
Evander Kane opened the scoring versus the Oilers Tuesday with a power-play goal and then tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in Tuesday’s 4-3 overtime win against Edmonton. Kane has now collected five points in his past five games and has seven points in 15 games played this season.
OV CAN’T FIND A GOAL
Alex Ovechkin will try and get back on track tonight, having gone six games without a goal, as he was only able to tally an assist Wednesday versus Boston. Ovechkin has been stuck with 12 goals since scoring a hat trick against St. Louis on Nov. 23.
